The business of fashion: A major economic force

Barely out of one fashion year, we are all buzzing over what 2013 has in store for us all.

This year saw the launch on the first ever three-day London Collections: Men which opened to rave reviews and preparations are well underway for a second year. We also witnessed beautiful and theatrical events such as Britain Creates and the recent BFC Awards.

Fashion Week is now no longer just a September event – it is now pretty much all year round. Is it s a lot of pressure on designers? Or does it allow for a greater presence of designers across a broad section of tastes and collection styles? Such global events based in our capital bring home the focus on recognising talent and also allowing for investment opportunities that may otherwise go unnoticed or become swallowed up by mass-produced fashion (I am going to mention the Primarks of the world).

More recently Topshop has redeemed itself with showcasing NEWGEN talent at Fashion Week. And this year creating a social media frenzy with our love affair with technology on the catwalk.

Names such as Xander Zhou, Richard Nicoll, Richard James, and a personal favourite, and a bit of a wild card, Dion Lee are emerging as fashion must-sees. And following the British Fashion Council Awards, we are certainly very excited to see what J.W Anderson and Jonathan Saunders will release next on the fashion world.

Further excitement reigns high with the recent appointment of Alexander Wang to the creative helm at Balenciaga as Creative Director. At 28 years old, the eyes of the fashion world will be watching closely as we believe that this will be the start of some very important moving and shaking up of the fashion industry highlighting it across the globe as a major economic power.

And speaking of strategic and economic moves, the rumour surrounding the appointment of Anna Wintour in the role of Ambassador to London by Obama’s administration is surely one to be taken with a pinch of salt? Let’s watch this space on that one.

All in all, what once was a mid-year frenzy of fashion fever that surrounding New York, London, Milan and Paris has now become a year round business.

London Collections: Men will take place 7th – 9th January 2013 at The Hospital Club, 24 Endell Street, WC2H 9HQ.

The gorgeous, talented Jonathan Saunders who’s SS2013 collection has set the commercial world buzzing. Samantha Cameron is a fan and presented Saunders with the BFC Award for Emerging Talent earlier this month.
