This is a heavy satin and embroided jacked by Yves St Laurent from the 1980’s Le Soleil Collection.
Suzy Menkes wore this jacket to her first fashion show as Fashion Editor of the International Herald Tribune in 1988.
Today will become an iconic day in fashion history, as Christies hosted an online only sale of one of the most desirable, one of the most carefully curated wardrobes owned by Suzy Menkes – fashion editor of the International Herald Tribune and an acknowledged authority on fashion.
It’s an honour to either walk past, bump straight into, or be sat opposite Ms Menkes on several occasions at London Fashion Week and shows either side of LFW. Suzy Menkes radiates a stern intelligence at any show, but when you see Suzy in the room, you know it will be a good show.
The collection consists of 80 pieces of clothing, bags and accessories by likes of Emilio Pucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Chanel, and Ossie Clark, which we hear Naomi Campbell has her eagle eye on. Such a collection is rare, and probably the closest we have seen is at the V&A Museum. With items from the mid 1960’s through to the mid 1990’s, this really is a time-line of fashion at its best.
